The Temple of Heaven and Tiananmen Square

The Temple of Heaven.
Visualize a procession of incense carried by priest at the Temple of Heaven.
This is the place where the Emperor would humble himself to pray to the Gods for an abundant harvest.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasty, the Emperors would pray during ceremonies here.
The circular wooden building is entirely built with no nails?

Built between 1406 - 1420.
We learned that the Chinese people believe that 'Earth is represented by a square' and 'Heaven by a circle.'

Little Debbie enjoying discovering the amazing world of China.

A wee 'would be' Emperor posing for visitors.

The last Emperor of China was chosen by Empress Dowager Cixi on her deathbed.  Puyi became Emperor at age 2 years and 10 months in December 1908.
He was the 12th and final ruler of the Qing dynasty from 1908-1912.
His life was very tumultuous and a great movie to see to witness this is 'The Last Emperor.'

Above and below is Tiananmen Square.  Below is a photo from 1989 of what I remembered....the Chinese students demonstrating against the government.  One student standing defiantly in front of a procession of 3 tanks.  Several hundred demonstrators were killed during what is known as the 'Tiananmen Square Massacre.'
Above is Tiananmen Square today.  Incredible flowers and a vast area of visitors.

Our guide Peter warned us before we got off the bus.
'If anything happens, do not stop, keep moving.  And do not take photos of the guards.'
Woops.

Across the street from Tiananmen Square is the
Forbidden City.

The entrance building to the Forbidden City houses Chairman Mao who's body lies in a crystal coffin.

Just hanging out in Tiananmen Square.
At 109 acres it is one of the largest squares in the world.

A lovely cup of tea awaits us when we stopped for a bite to eat.
